I know there is a lot of common sense and brainpower here, so I'd like to ask an
OT question.

I'm looking for a new computer desk. I see a lot of them I like but they all
have a cabinet built in for a CPU tower. The cabinet has a door on it. I'm
wondering if there would be any ill effects having the tower behind a closed
door. My system has two 120mm fans in the front, a 140mm fan in the top, a 120mm
fan in the back, and an air inlet in the bottom right below the power supply. It
also has a 120mm CPU cooling fan. Would all this overcome the tower being inside
a cabinet without me having to have the door open all the time? Also, during hot
weather, we're air conditioned. As always, thanks.

They usually have some openings in the back...but if you're worried about
it, the backing on most of these is just a heavy fiber board, you can open
it further, or even place another fan in it if you prefer (I did this for a
home theater receiver).

You need that many fans (Game machine?), then you need Logical air flow. Lots
of it.

Heat builds up fast in small spaces. Even with the door open.
Also
Beware of recirculating flows (Where a portion of the Hot air makes it back
to the front fans)

Logical= Don't fight mother nature. Heat rises.
Cold in near bottom front, Hot exit to rear near the top (Best if ZERO
restrictions. No back) Add a Cabinet/Desk (exit) helper fan to assist the flow
if there is a back.

Remember the 'Easy Bake Oven'? Baked a (small) cake with a 100W light bulb.

Rfdjr1-

My old computer desk has a vertical partition about 12 inches from the
side. That is where I keep the CPU tower. It does not have a front
door, or a panel behind the CPU tower.

Over the years, most furniture items I have purchased have required
assembly. You should be able to omit a door or panel you think would
create an access or cooling problem. Just be sure you have sufficient
structural elements so it does not fall apart!

Thanks for the replies. And good point about the Easy Bake Oven!
