That's not HD for I Love Lucy's Christmas episodes on CBS.

a tv show that old might have been shot on film - in which case it could
be genuinely HD despite the age.

"I Love Lucy" was shot on film. Desi presaged syndication.

We see the original Monty Python's Flying Circus at all because one
of the Pythons "stole" the videotapes, which otherwise would have been
reused. A lot of would-be-now-valuable BBC programming
was lost this way.

Just because it's 4:3 doesn't mean it can't be HD. As mentioned, "Lucy"
was shot on film, and it can be scanned at HD. But, since it was
designed for TV, the film itself may not have been as fine a grain as
would be used for a big-screen motion picture.

Huge difference in PQ between film and the tapes widely used for TV
until.....(I have no date, nor knowledge that they are not still used in
some instances.)

Yep. The entire "Prisoner" series, shot on film, was released on 4:3
BluRay in full HD. Yes, it's a bit grainy, but much superior to the
previous DVD release.

Hmm! So, Loading Image... was not a true wide screen HD
then? It was shown before the two episodes started. I thought KCBS, OTA,
messed up with its SD picture to HD feed. :(

looks like they cropped the 4:3 image to make it widescreen to me - the
framing of the tree doesnt seem right.

Yeah, it loks like you're right. Bah to CBS to tricking viewers.

It's getting common now for 4:3 material to be subjected to mixtures of
stretching and cropping to 16:9. People seem to freak out if they ever
see any type of letterboxing or pillarboxing (I remember years ago that
Disney called 4:3 DVD's "Family Friendy Full Screen"!). For example,
Cartoon Network is now 100% 16:9, even for old material.

From the properties (right click -- Properties):

"Dimensions: 1,920px × 1,080px (scaled to 1,006px × 565px)"

I'd call that HD. Besides, it looks like HD to me, and I *am* wearing
my glasses :-)

I decided to view it full screen (which is 1920x1080). It is very sharp
by SD TV standards, but the original image itself doesn't seem to be
HD. If it were I could see for instance what is in the pictures on the
wall. So my opinion is now wavering a bit.

I can only comment on the first half hour of the show. It was transferred in 1989 on a Rank MkIII telecine from the original 35mm to a digital component VTR. I do not know if the element was Original Camera Negative or the positive print. The colorizing hardware was designed by some LA guys I worked with later and was PC based (386 machines) and definitely std def. If you look at the image enhancement you can see relatively large borders. These would be much smaller in s true HD image. In a perfect world you would not see any 'enhancement' artifacts.

All in all, it was a pretty nice show.

Happy New Year
