Is there a way or a program that will enable me to convert or transfer a DVD
video to a wmv or avi format so I can put the video on a flashdrive?

Okay, sounds like a dumb idea. But I'm not talking about a Hollywood produced
movie on a DVD. A year or so ago I send some old video tapes and 8mm film of my
family from about 40 years ago, and my kids growing up, to a company to have
them transfered to DVD's. I now have a Sony TV with USB ports. I'm using one of
the ports for a flash drive with a lot of music on it that I can listen to any
time I want while in front of the TV. I'd like to be able to do the same with
these old family movies without having to use the DVD's themself. The TV plays
.wmv .mpeg, .mp4 and .avi files so I thought if I could convert the DVD's to one
of these formats and put them on the flash drive, I could watch them whenever I
wanted.

Thanks for any insight.

Handbrake:

http://handbrake.fr/

Last I used it, about two years back, it was a bit rough around the
edges, but it's free and it handles different formats really well.

I too use Handbrake. It is still one of the best for converting from DVD
to single file formats.

Tip: If you are converting a commercial DVD you have purchased, After you
select the DVD, up in the upper left corner is a pull-down box labeled
'Title'. If there are any special clips, etc., that you would also like
to convert, you can see and select them there.
