Ok, I have been noticing this for a while. If I have the
cable remote lying on the table and lay my glasses down in
front of the sending end of it the CABLE light will blink.
Apparently the remote can receive some kind of signal and
my glasses reflect enough light into the detector that it
interprets it as a programming signal. Does that seem
reasonable?

I don't know who made the remote, it was supplied by COX
when I first got my digital recorder several years ago.

Does this happen say 10 minutes after you've begun watching a show
or does it happen a few seconds after you change channels?

Many remotes take 2 seconds per device they control, first one
then the next, so the remote can continue sending for 8 seconds or so.

It is related to that sort of thing. When I notice this is
shortly after I have turned off the cable box and the TV,
using the off button on the remote. This does act as you say,
the remote pulses the DVR button, then waits about 3
seconds and goes through the other 3 buttons in sequence.
After that has happened I lay the remote down. Then I take off
my glasses and lay them down. It blinks just as I lay them down.
