3D TV question

Okay, I've had my new Sony 4K 3D TV for a few weeks now. I've only watched a
couple of DVD's which involved space, like the space station. I enjoy the 3D,
but what I'd like to know is will I ever see the type of 3D I've seen at places
like Disney World where things just seem to leap right out of the screen at you?
I realize I just might not have seen the right DVD or movie yet, but I'm
wondering what to expect eventually? I didn't buy this set because it was 3D but
now that I have it, I'd like to experience 3D as I've seen in the past.

Also, and I wish I remember what movie it was, but while browsing 3D movies on
Amazon, I saw one that came with glasses to watch the movie. They were the old
blue and red glasses like we use to get at the drive-in back in the 50's and
60's. My TV uses battery operated active 3D glasses. Does this mean that I can't
buy a movie which requires red/blue glasses because my TV operates at a
different technological level?

As always, thanks.

red and blue films would work - if you adjust the colour correctly.
they wouldn't be good quality 3d though.

If you want stuff coming out of the screen, then buy 3d content sold
for children, like 'Despicable Me'.

If the disc comes with the anaglyph glasses, the video is generated in
anaglyph. It's the same with pulfrich glasses.

All the Blu-ray 3d discs I've bought have worked fine with shutter &
passive 3dtvs.

Well, at first forget the red and blue stuff, it is very outdated. Your
4k TV is state of the art, also with BD 3D, but it cannot replace the
BIG screen where you saw great 3D movies! With stereo 3D it is a matter
of screen size how far the pop-out effects are coming to you, and when
the 3D movie is produced for BIG screens it cannot work the same on a
small screen (even 65 inches are small in this case)...

where you saw great 3D movies
Please list the names of these *GREAT* 3D movies. Or are they *ORDINARY*
movies with great (?) 3D ??

And I thought *I* was a smartass.

You know damn well what Klaus meant. You took it out of context.

He/she is absolutely correct. Been a few months since I've been to movie
in a theater. I saw Godzilla last week in IMAX 3D, and at times it was
like you were IN the movie. Never had that experience from a 3D HDTV.

Well, as a matter of fact NO. I didn't, and still don't, know what
he meant. Since neither you nor he will explain, I guess it's a secret.

How about this: It was a rhetorical question, a statement that, but for
3D, those movies would be mediocre at best.

Well, that depends on your meaning of "ordinary". What I mean with BIG
screen is known as IMAX 3D - that movies are mostly documentaries with
great 3D, not block busters. In these film theaters the screen is wider
than everywhere else, and "pop out" 3D objects are reaching to your seat.

At home you can get that effect using a 3D beamer and a wide projection
screen, standard size TV sets can not...

Mostly documentaries not block busters?

Since when?

Not really. The 3D effect in a given scene depends on the separation
(parallax) between the left and right images. It can be exaggerated or
reduced in any medium.

That separation as you are seeing it basically depends on two factors.
The first factor is the separation between the lenses when the picture
was taken (or the way that was simulated if it's an animated video). The
second factor is the scale of the image as you see it.

The latter depends on the screen size and on your distance from the
screen.

BluRay 3d is fully capable of bring things off the screen. I have a 65" set using passive glasses (Real D compatible) The depth depends entirely on the movie content. With Disney's "Tangled" during the floating lamp scene, you can reach out a almost touch the lamps. Really amazing. Lots of films bring items out into the room. It is dependent on how the film was produced and transferred to disc. The system is capable but not all programs take advantage.

Which BR 3D discs have those pop-up things? Does Life of Pi have any?
