I have a WDTV player. It will play avi and mp3. It would be nice if
I could use the speakers to play music without having to have the TV
screen active.

Does it not have [analog] line out phono sockets or even a [digital]
SPDIF socket?

If so, there is no need to have the TV on at all, and you can listen
to the music in better quality than through the usually not very
great quality TV speakers.

And even if he lacks such gear, he could look at his TV settings to see
if the screen can be turned off. (Mine can, but I don't need to do that,
since I just run the analog audio to the receiver, as you suggested.)
