Discussion:
Computer to TV hookup

Hopefully the right group to ask.

I have a spare computer, running Windows 7, which I've hooked up to my living
room TV, which is a Sony Bravia 65" 4K set. Overkill, I know, but I just wanted
to see how it looked. The video card supports 1080 video, and the picture is
fantastic. I got hooked on watching Youtube videos taken from the cockpits of
airplanes.

Anyway, the computer is tucked away behind my sofa and hooked up to the TV which
is across the room, by an HDMI cable from the computer, through a hole in the
floor, and across to the TV, up through another hole and plugged into one of
four HDMI inputs on the set. So, the cable Ibought is thirty feet.

As I said, the picture is great. My problem is sound. When I was using the
computer in my office, I had speakers plugged into a Creative Labs sound card.
Now it's just the HDMI cable. And I'm getting no sound. I should say, if I crank
the TV volume WAY up, I can get sound but otherwise none. Shouldn't the sound be
coming through the HDMI cable? I know it does from my Blu-ray player. I
shouldn't have to run an audio cable from the sound card to an input I have yet
to check for in the TV should I?

I've fumbled around the TV and Windows settings looking for something I've
missd, but so far nothing.

Any thoughts on what my problem could be? Thanks.

Change your systems Sound Device to use the HDMI Audio.

Thanks. I'll try again, but I spent last night going through all the settings I
could find and didn't see anything like that. You're talking the computer system
right? Not the TV? And would it be in the BIOS? It's an ASUS P6X58D Premium
motherboard. I actuallu called ASUS today and the guy I talked to told me to run
a cable from the sound card to the TV. Somehow, this just doesn't sound right,
using an HDMI cable.

I have two ASUS motherboards and in the control panel of the older one (
ASUS P5B Vista Edition MB) under sound is a selection for HDMI audio as the
default device, but that actually is a setting for the ASUS ATI Graphics
card (ASUS Graphics Card 4350).

The other ASUS motherboard (ASUS P7P55D-E Pro) has the same ASUS ATI
graphics card (ASUS Graphics Card 4350) but as it is currently DOA so I
cannot check. Check control panel / Sound.

Thanks for that info. I don't recall seeing control panel anyplace. Where would
I find that? Is it in the BIOS or should it be a program I run that was maybe
installed when the motherboard installed? Thanks again.

Control Panel is part of Windows. Click the Start button. Control
Panel is one of the options on the right side of the popup. When you
click it you'll get either a long list that includes Sound or a page
of general categories including Hardware and Sound. Drill down from
there.

It's worth spending some time in Control Panel to see what else you
can modify in Windows.

That was my bad. I'm very familiary with Windows control panel. My mind was just
stuck on the ASUS motherboard idea and possibly having to screw with the BIOS. I
was in control panel the other night but couldn't find anything about HDMI. Nor
could I find anyting in the ASUS Realtek sound controls. I'll spend some more
time tonight trying to figure this out. Thanks for the reply.

Still playing with this problem with no joy. But a question has come to mind.
While I understand that an HDMI cable carries, or should carry video and audio,
the HDMI cable I'm using is plugged into the ATI Radeon HD 5770 video card in
the computer. Should this HDMI cable be picking up audio from the video card
too? As I said in my original post, I have a Creative Labs sound card in the
system, which is where I got my sound when I used it as my desktop. So I've been
wondering if the audio video card HDMI output is sending sound too?

And I did check Sound in the Control Panel and see that I did make an HDMI
connection the default. I CAN get audio, but I have to have the TV sound level
cranked up to around 70-75 on a scale of 100.

I supposed I could run yet another cable, an audio cable, from the sound card to
an available analog RCA input in the back of the TV, but I don't like any more
cables than necessary. And I don't want to be chenging audio out settings all
the time with the TV. That's why I went with an HDMI cable to begin with,
thinking I'd get video and aution. Thanks for listening.

If the sound playback devices under the sound setting in Control Panel don't
show the HDMI out, then your situation may be exactly that - the sound won't
pass through and you only have video out via HDMI.

You may have to run the analog out from your sound card to the TV analog input.

My ASUS MBs are different as far as sound out.

I use SPDIF output to my Stereo some of the time but used a audio cable to
my now dead 37" monitor as it's connections are VGA and DVI. (And yes HDMI
which I tested but I do not remember if I tested audio.)

The sound chips in the two motherboards are different and switching audio
output is different for the two MBs.

The ASUS P5B Vista Edition MB has sound live always on both SPDIF and analog
sound card output. I assume HDMI also but I cannot test due to the dead 37"
monitor.

So no switching if I wish to use my 5.1 Stereo, I just turn the Stereo on
and then turn down the volume down on the 37" monitor.

The ASUS P7P55D-E Pro requires me to go into the control panel and change
the default audio out device. That is a bummer.

ASUS Graphics Card 4350 is the same in both HTPCs.

Problem solved. After messing around with this tonight, I went into Control
Panel/Sound and saw that I did in fact have the AMD HDMI chosen as the default.
I did that the other night but still had no volume. So I decided to check
Properties. When I did, I immediately found the problem. One of the five tabe in
the Properties was Level. I clicked on that tab and sure enough, there was a
master volume slide which was turned all the way down. I jacked it up to about
50% and not I have all the volume I need. I spend the rest of the night watching
YouTube airplane cockpit videos with full audio. Thanks for all the replies and
help. I just wanted to make sure everyone knew I solved the issue and how I did
it. Thank you all.
