TV as a monitor?

I'm coming into possession of a Toshiba 32" flat screen TV. It was my
mother-in-laws, who is now in a nursing home. The set is maybe two years old.
I'm currently using a 24" Dell monitor on my computer. I've been considering a
larger monitor and now I'll be picking this Toshiba up. It has HDMI inputs and
my graphics card has HDMI output.

My question is, how good is a TV used as a monitor? Are the graphics as sharp?
Am I losing anything going from a true monitor to a TV?

Thanks.

Hi,

My only HTPC Monitor is my 37" HDTV with a DEAD ATSC tuner.

The graphics via DVI are sharp and the HDMI will be just as sharp (ASUS
Graphics Card 4350, YMMV) but I only tried that years ago.

With both of my Laptops the monitor has some HDMI sync issues, as your set
is only two years old you should have no problem.

I am running 150% magnification on W7 due to my $4400 new eyes and some tiny
type blown up requires me to move closer to the monitor.

I control my HTPC using a Wireless Trackball, Logitech Wireless Trackball
M570 which allows control from 8 - 10 feet away or more.

Windows fills the screen at it's native resolution.

I also have the desktop when selected on the VGA output normally driven by
an ATSC tuner card, desktop is not as sharp.

I suspect you will use your neck muscles more with the larger screen,
smaller screens are better for some work.

as long as it has a full pixel option allowing you to turn off overscan
then it should be fine.
also it might have different picture modes - setting it to 'game' or the
like will keep response time low.
only drawback is a 32" pc monitor would probably have a higher than HD
resolution - but if you can live with that it should work.

Rfdjr1-

"HD" is relative. I use a 22 inch 1080P TV as a monitor for a little
Raspberry Pi computer, and it is quite adequate. If it were 32 inch and
only 720P, I suspect your Dell monitor would be better. Try It.

Can your graphics card support two monitors?

Thanks for the replies. I thought the TV as 1080. It's only 720 and probably not
worth it compared to my high def Dell monitor. Think I'll hold off until I can
afford a 32" Dell monitor.
