More of a computer question but...

I know there's a lot of knowlegable folks here.

I'm looking for a new computer desk. My preference is one with a hutch on it.

My current, 10 year old and beat up desk has a hutch and it still allows me to
have my somewhat large tower sit comfortably on the desk under the hutch. The
tower is 19" tall, 20.5" deep (without allowing for the cables coming out the
back) and 8" wide.

So far, the closest thing I can find is one desk with a compartment, 23" deep,
with a cutout in the back for the cabling. However, the available desk space
itself is limited.

Then I found a really nice, large unit with a hutch. But the thing is only 19.5"
deep, which means the front edge of my tower would be sticking out over the
front edge of the desk.

My question (finally) is this: Since I've first owned a computer, it's been
sitting on a desk. I've been through seven or eight of them over the years, with
three or four different desks. If I got this 19" deep desk, I was thinking
(shudder) of plutting the tower on the floor next to the desk. I can buy a
rollling platform for it to sit on. And there'd be no problem with ventilation.
But how dirty would it get as far as dust getting into the box? More so than if
it was on a desk or some other platform? This might sound like a stupid question
to some. But I'm slightly OCD and so used to the unit being up at eye level, the
thought of change after all these years flusters me some.

How many, if any, leave their tower on the floor, and are you happy with that
placement? Thanks so much.

If I were buying a computer desk today, I would get one that allowed me
to work standing up or sitting down..... Huge advantage, IMHO.

Does much dust collect under your refrigerator?

I don't know. I'll have to look.

You won't need it much. Of course, twice a year you do, but it's not
that often. I just lean mine forward to access the back. Once it's set
up, I hardly change it - and I have several things plugged in.

A good USB hub on top would cover a lot of this.

Dirtier, but perhaps not that much dirtier. The floor is dirtier but the
air near the floor isn't that much dirtier.

That's a serious consideration.

Computer furniture is kind of going the way of the dinosaur. People use
laptops, tablets, phones.

I have for years and they're fine. You have to take them apart and clean
them now and again; I do it every couple years. I even clean
the fans in the power supply if I can.
