Sound Bar Question
(too old to reply)

Probably a stupid question but indulge me.

I'm going to buy my Mom a 40" Sony HDTV to replace the old 27" CRT set she's
had for years. She's extremely hard of hearing. She has to have the volume maxed
out to hear the TV.

I know from experience that the speakers on the new flat panel TV's leave a lot
to be desired and I know she won't be able to hear it, even at maximum volume.
So I want to get a sound bar to go with the TV.

My question is simply, once the sound bar is hooked up, will it be alright to
leave it on all the time so whenever she turns the TV on, she immediately has
sound and doesn't have to deal with a second remote control for the sound bar?
She's 89 years old and not exactly technically savvy. So I want to save her a
step with the sound. She knows how to turn the volume up or down on the cable
box, and how to mute it, which she does as soon as someone comes in the house.

Thanks for any replies.

ZVox Audio is your friend.

easy, easy, easy peasy. Set it up and it's done. Period. She needs to
do nothing at all.

Thanks for that info. Nice looking units. I wish I'd known of these before I
bought a Sony sound bar and mounting bracket for my new 65" Sony 4K. I like the
idea of being able to set the TV right on top of the ZVox. I'd need the biggest
one but it might be worth trying to unload the sound bar and get one of these.
As for my Mom, all I'd have to do is connect this ZVox. turn it on and that's
it? No need to turn on and off? Thanks again.

That's it. You don't even need to turn it on when you set it up. All
you have to do is test to make sure that it's set up for her remote
control--power, volume, mute. That's IT.

If the power goes out in the house, you don't care. This unit, via
remote control functioning, is literally slaved to the TV remote
functions of power, volume, and mute. When the power comes back on, so
does the functionality of the ZVox.

How is it any different than a sound bar?

<snip>

What's In The Box?
One 1-meter stereo 3.5mm mini-jack to mini-jack connecting cord
One 2-meter toslink (optical digital) connecting cable
One remote control with power on/off, volume up/down, mute, PhaseCue II
(three level settings), bass up/down and treble up/down, input
selection, Output Leveling (OL), Dialog Emphasis (DE).
Power adapter and cord
One-sheet safety instructions and operations manual, fast setup sheet
and remote control programming instruction sheet

<snip>

Getting back to the OP's question, the Zvox would also have to stay on
all of the time so she doesn't have to use 2 different remotes, right?

OK, I missed this. So I guess it would depend on what kind of remote
control she would be using to operate the TV. I don't know how this
would work with the remote that came with my Panasonic plasma. It will
only control the TV. OTOH, the remote for my 27" CRT Panasonic can
control more than one device.

<snip>

Uses Your Remote Control. The SoundBase system can be programmed to
respond to your remote control -- it takes less than a minute. Then your
TV remote...or cable box remote...or satellite receiver remote...can
control volume, mute and power functions of the ZVOX system.

No.

It goes on in two ways:

a) when you power on the TV
b) when you use the volume control

So it goes on when you hit TV power. It sees the TV power signal and
powers on. It will power off automatically after 5 or 10 minutes of no
sound signal, or it will power off when you power your TV off.

Should you pause your TV for longer than 10 minutes, for example, and it
goes off, all you have to do is hit the volume button.

It has its own remote codes, but it also can be configured to work
directly with your TV remote so that the TV power and volume buttons
also work the soundbar. That's it. Once installed, it's there and just
works. No need to power it on and off separately. It's integrated, via
the remote control, with whatever's going on with the TV.

I have a Samsung sound bar that comes on automatically when
the TV comes on and turns off 20 minutes after the TV goes off.
That is it comes on when it gets a signal on the digital input.
Volume is still controlled by the sound bar remote, but if she
just sets it to a desired level and leaves it alone she shouldn't
have any problem.

Whoops, I see that she controls the volume and mute with the cable
remote. Does that work through the cable box, or is it a universal
remote that controls the volume and mute of the TV? That's what I
have and it won't work with the sound bar. I have to use the
separate sound bar remote.
