I recently got a CCTV security camera with a DVR.

It came with no manual, only a CD.

The instructions have many typographical errors.

The package says you can see your cameras from a smart phone.

The instructions were clear as mud.

Is the right group or is there another that is more appropriate ?

Probably a good of a group as any other, it's not like usenet is overflowing
with posts.

Would be handy if you gave a make/model for the dvr.

Most of those things require an app running on the smartphone to view the
thing. The major problem with configuring the dvr for use like that is the
plug-n-play feature to allow your router to "be seen" generally doesn't work
so you have to manually set the networking up.

Be wary if it says something like "can be seen with any web browser", it
can provided you have the right plugin and codec available which usually means
you need like Windows XP (only) and downloading some auto-installer from a
chinese website.
