Hearing voices!

I was watching TV this evening, a cable connection, and wearing headphones as my
wife was asleep. I paused the TV to getup for a minute and hadn't taken the
headphones off yet and though I heard very soft voices. I thought maybe my wife
had woken up and had the TV in the bedroom on, but that wasn't the case. Then I
realized the voice/s were in the headphones. Very low. Almost subliminal. I
could tell it was a female and it sounded like a phone conversation. I muted the
TV to see if that made a difference, and it didn't. I still heard the voices.
Anyone have any idea what could have caused this? I never noticed it before.
Very strange. One more thing. The headphones are connected to aabout a fifty
foot wire that comes from my TV, into the attic, and down a wall to near the
sofa. I couldn't route it any other way because we have no carpet to hide the
wire under. Also, tonight, I installed a new headphone amplifier to the end of
the headphone cable to increase the volume because last week I installed a
second pair of headphones and the volume on both dropped dramatically. Could the
long wire and/or the amplifier be acting as some sort of antenna or receiver for
someones wireless phone? Thanks.

My first thought is an AM radio broadcast being picked up by
some nonlinearity in the amplifier. That probably wouldn't
sound like a conversation though. Well, maybe if it was a call
in show.

I agree with Bill Gill that it's likely some sort of radio broadcast being picked
up, made more likely by the length of the wire connection you setup.

I have been trying to think what you might be able to do to get rid
of the voices, assuming that it is a radio signal being picked up
by your system. I couldn't think of anything right off hand, but
I thought of a place that you might be able to get a good answer.
Try the news group sci.electronics.basics. There are a lot of people
there who are knowledgeable about that sort of thing and they
can probably help.

Sometimes a cold solder joint acts a little like a semiconductor, so you
might have a diode acting as a detector of some strong nearby signal, or
even a broadcast station. Maybe, if it sounded like a phone
conversation, it was a ham radio operator nearby.

My receiver used to pick up the CW from a ham next door. He said it was
my fault, that there was a problem with the power supply, and I should
put in a bypass capacitor, which he told me where to put. I did so and
the problem disappeared. This was in vacuum tube days.

There are stories of people who pick up radio broadcasts with their
tooth fillings, at least back when fillings were metallic. They were
usually folks who lived or worked near a radio broadcast antenna.
